Painted Binga Baskets

Painted Binga Baskets

Binga Baskets-  are handwoven in the Binga area of Zimbabwe, made from hard vine and llala palm and then trucked down to Cape Town.

A small basket can take up to three days to weave. The Binga basket is traditionally a grain winnowing basket. Once we receive these amazing baskets, we choose the specific designs to suit certain colours and our much-valued Shiellah, also from Zim, then paints them to make them more contemporary and appealing to today’s market. The painting takes hours, great precision, and skill.

The painted Binga Basket makes an extremely eye-catching feature to a wall, most attractive in larger odd-numbered groups if the space is vast. Should the space be small, arranging them in a group of 3 is very effective too. It’s such a great way to add texture, colour, and depth to a wall, not to mention a unique and bespoke piece of artwork to a space.

Meet the artisan

My name is Sheillah July, a Zimbabwean single mother of one son.

I was born in a family of 2 boys and 3 girls and I am the last born.

Because I love colours, through painting I am able to express myself. What I like most about working at W E E V is I’m able to do my hobby and earn extra money. I am saving to build a home in Zimbabwe for my son.

I wish to see myself amongst many different artists and for our painted baskets to be recognized World wide.
